The activity at the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH) attracted 11 volunteers, all of whom were first timers. They had a tour of SAVH and introduction to equipment to aid the visually handicapped. The volunteers also experienced a 5 minute walk into a pitch dark room. They went in 2 by 2, guided by a visually handicapped person. This gave them a personal encounter on how it was like being visually handicapped. An eye opening education for all of them indeed! It was after this session that the volunteers were introduced to the 26 visually handicapped clients. The clients were there for a sheltered workshop. However, as jobs have declined, they are usually engaged in social activities instead. The volunteers started with a karaoke session, and had fun interacting as a group. They then proceeded to split into smaller groups and engaged them in different games. These activities brought much cheer to the volunteers as well as to the beneficiaries. The day closed with a sad good-bye and many of the volunteers were already looking forward to either another activity with SAVH or with SG Cares.
