Volunteering Opportunities Using SG Cares portal Volunteer Leader (VL) Volunteer Host Organisation (VHO)
Volunteering Opportunities
1. What volunteer activities does SG Cares offer? SG Cares aims to be the first stop for all kinds of episodic volunteering opportunities in Singapore. Activities will serve the elderly, disabled, environment and the arts, among many other different causes in the community. There’ll be an activity to interest every volunteer. 2. What is episodic volunteering? An episodic volunteer serves in an activity for a few hours at a time, that is, a short episode versus continuous volunteering on a fixed schedule. For example, playing simple games with the elderly or cleaning a public park. Such activities may recur yet engage a different volunteer group for each session. This allows the episodic volunteer to sign up for an activity only once and move on to another activity.
3. What is regular volunteering?
Regular volunteering refers to taking part in an activity continuously at least once a month, for a fixed schedule. These activities require volunteers to commit to a longer period of time as compared to episodic volunteering. For example, a volunteer may befriend an elderly person for a period of a few months. 4. Do I need any special skills to volunteer? No, special skills or intensive training are not required for SG Cares activities. However, particular skills and/or experience may be required for direct volunteering opportunities with the VHO.
5. Can I volunteer for any activity? Yes, you can choose any activity you are interested in. Alternatively, you may also sign up for volunteer opportunities directly with our VHO partners. 6. How much time do I have to commit? SG Cares volunteering activities typically range from 2 to 4 hours. You can choose an activity based on your interest and schedule.. For volunteering opportunities directly managed by the VHO, do check with the VHO on the details of the commitment required. 7. Is there any age limit for volunteers? For SG Cares activities, people of all ages can volunteer - there is something for everyone. Youth aged 13 to 16 require parental consent before signing up for activities. Those aged 12 and below also require parental consent before signing up for activities and must be accompanied by an adult during the activity. Parents who have signed up for an activity and wish to bring their children along should consult their Volunteer Leader on the feasibility of this arrangement. For direct volunteering opportunities with VHOs, do check with the respective contact personnel from the VHO.
8. Why do volunteers need to go through volunteer orientation first? The SG Cares volunteer orientation is designed to help you understand the SG Cares programme better and volunteer effectively. It also guides you on the use of our real-time portal and how to manage your volunteer account. Do note that the SG Cares volunteer orientation is only required if you take part in SG Cares activities. 9. What is the format of the SG Cares volunteer orientation? You can either attend a Group Orientation session or complete an Online Orientation. Details can be found here. 10. Can I volunteer for any SG Cares activity without attending an orientation? Volunteer orientation is important. If you are ready to start volunteering immediately, you can take our Online Orientation (available after you create your SG Cares account). It will only take about 10 minutes to complete. For direct volunteering opportunities, you do not need to attend the orientation. Please contact the VHO directly. 11. Can I volunteer with my family or friends? How do I do so? Yes, you can. Once you sign up as a volunteer and attend the orientation, you can sign up for an activity and then invite your family and friends to join you in the SG Cares activities. You do all this through the portal. Alternatively, you and your loved ones may sign up directly with the VHO too.
12. No one contacted me after I signed up directly with the VHO. Why is this so? We appreciate your kind patience as the staff from the VHO will get in touch with you shortly. Please feel free to contact them directly to obtain more information on the volunteering opportunity. The VHO Contact details are available in the SG Cares website and are also in the confirmation email sent to you. Back to top Using SG Cares portal
13. Do I need to open an account with SG Cares? Yes, you must create an account in order to sign up for activities. But if you are signing up for a volunteer opportunity directly with the VHO, you may use a one-time registration and will not need to create an account. Please take note that the details for one-time registration will not be saved for the subsequent visit. 14. Do I need a personal email address? You would need an email address to register online with SG Cares. Important updates and information will be sent to you at this address. 15. Why do volunteers register online only? How do those without Internet access register? At present, SG Cares is using internet technology to provide a quick and convenient platform to communicate and facilitate the exchange of volunteering services. We encourage those without internet access to seek help from their family or friends.

Volunteer Leader (VL)
16. How do I become a volunteer leader?
You must be a SG Cares member who has volunteered three or more times a year and recommended by a VL. You are also eligible if you are a very experienced volunteer or are nominated by a VHO or other partner organisation with which you are currently serving as a leader. VL candidates will be interviewed by SG Cares in person or over the telephone and must attend VL training. 17. What kind of volunteering experience must I have to lead an activity? You should have previously participated in the activity you are interested to lead in, be very familiar with the activity and the VHO as well as confident to lead and manage the volunteers. 18. How many projects is a volunteer leader expected to lead in a month or a year? We encourage each volunteer leader to adopt an activity and lead it for three consecutive months (on average once or twice a month) or lead four or more activities a year. Besides leading the activity, you would also be performing some administrative duties. Back to top
