Volunteer Retention Takes Centre Stage at VC Connect SG Cares held its first VC Connect session on 3 June 2011. The session saw volunteer managers and volunteer coordinators coming together to connect, network and share best practices. It was modeled after V Connect, first introduced by NVPC in 2008. Seventy-nine participants from 58 local non-profit organisations were present. Participants gathered to share experiences, ideas and solutions pertaining to volunteer retention. They also enjoyed the opportunity to network with other individuals involved in the work of volunteer management. The session saw a frank discussion, as participants exchanged their views on the perceptions and motivations of volunteers. They generally perceived volunteers as passionate, energetic and responsible individuals. When asked what would encourage volunteer coordinators to return as volunteers with an organisation, most identified appreciation, recognition and meaningful work as key motivators. Participants also learnt about the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, which utilises the skills and strengths of individuals to better the communities they live in. They took part in an exercise to discover their own assets and realised the advantages of focusing on the assets of individual volunteers for volunteer retention. SG Cares has set up a Facebook group to enable participants to interact, share ideas and challenges and post interesting articles relating to volunteer management. VC Connect will be held on a quarterly basis, focusing on different topics each session to allow volunteer managers and volunteer coordinators to meet staff from other organisations and get fresh ideas and tips that they can implement in their own organisations.
