A cultural exchange, an experience that shaped lives. A cultural exchange. An encounter that moved the hearts of many. An experience that shaped lives. The group of us from Okinawa Christian School International (OCSI) arrived at the Grace Orchard School excited yet nervous. We had planned a fun-filled programme for the students at Grace Orchard School. All 30 of us – teachers and students alike - did not know what to expect at Grace Orchard, a school for children and youth with mild intellectual disabilities or autism spectrum disorders. Our uncertainties melted away when we were greeted warmly by the children. Their excitement and smiles made many of us feel welcome and at ease. We started the day with our students performing a dance in Japan’s traditional Yukata costume and treated them to two skits themed around friendship and unity. Some of the children were shy initially but opened up when we taught them to fold origami and shared the story behind peace cranes. The atmosphere was very positive and energetic. One volunteer later shared how much the experience moved her, “The students from Grace Orchard School were all excited to complete their paper hearts and when they did, the smiles and sense of achievement shown on their faces meant so much to me. Towards the end, one child came up to me to give me the paper heart he made. It was so sweet of him. I will keep this heart as long as it lasts.” Volunteering at Grace Orchard School was an excellent fit for us from Okinawa Christian School. Beyond the enriching volunteering experience, the opportunity affirmed many of our students’ desire to go into teaching. One deeply touched by the encounter recounted, “My experience at Grace Orchard had reaffirmed my decision to major in Early Childhood Special Education. I was able to have a sense of what it would be like to work with children with special needs and I feel that it is something I want to do in future.” Contributed by senior class students and a teacher at Okinawa Christian School International For more information on Grace Orchard School, please visit their website at http://www.go.edu.sg. |
